From BF2 Technical Information Wiki

As a complete newcomer to the gaming community I recently splashed out and hired a Multiplay server for a bunch of guys at work. Average age is probably 30ish.. As I have been left in charge of the server admin I have been gathering as much information as possible in order to familiarise myself with, How, what, where, who, and why.

I came across your site on my travels and would just like to say that I have so far found it to be an invaluable sorce of information. The one thing I find lacking is an "Over all" picture of how it all fits together. So much is assumed by "Pro-gamers" that they all seem to have forgotten newcomers. Whilst I am aware that these things have evolved over the years I do wish that someone would put together, for want of a better name a "Dummies Guide" to remotely operating a Gameserver. The first thing could probably be an insite into IRC. This ancient form of communication appears to be one of the main ways the gaming community converses with one another, but, until you have discovered where these "Chat rooms" are you are in the dark.

Anyway.. Having lots of fun with my BF2 Server... Away now to get a "Dummies Guide" to Python..See if I can cock it up alltogether...

Thanks for the suggestions! We do have a "Big Picture" page that attempts to explain how (from a technical perspective) everything fits together, but now that I look at it after having been away from it for a couple of months, I agree that if you're not a "game geek" it leaves a lot out. This site doesn't try to be "everything about BF2"--just about the technical aspects of how it works and how you can modify/reprogram it--but I think you raise a good point that we ought to include some introductory material to make even the technical stuff more accessible. I also think your suggestion about having more information (any information?) about how to run a server might be a good idea--it wasn't our original focus, but there is a fair bit of overlap in the subjects, and their certainly is a lot of overlap in the interests of our community. --Woody 09:48, 11 Oct 2005 (MDT)
